Valentine A. Aletor, a product of Edo College, Benin; Government College Ibadan & the University of Ibadan is a Professor of Agricultural Biochemistry & Nutrition since 1995 with a strong background in Nutritional Biochemistry, Food Science, Environmental Protection & Product Quality Assurance through dietary manipulations. His research interests also include Biotechnological enhancement of the utilization of poor quality food/feed resources such as agro-industrial byproducts & farm “wastes”' in animal feeding and, Germplasm development & quality enhancement to promote Food & Nutrition securities and Agricultural resilience. His interests in alternative foods/feeds resources relate to their nutritive characteristics, anti-quality/bioactive components, physio-pathological and economic implications of their dietary inclusion.
He is a Grantsmaster with considerable experience in individual and multi-disciplinary PROBLEM-ORIENTED /NEED-DRIVEN project design, implementation and monitoring in Food/Agricultural, Health & allied research at both national and international levels, including the Consultative Group in International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). He was a collaborating Scientist with the Presidential Task-Force in 1989 on Alternative Feed Formulation for Livestock: Product Development and Health Implications. An NUC programme/ institutional Accreditation Panelist from 1989 to date.
Among his academic distinctions are: a 2-time grant award by the International Foundation for Science (IFS), Sweden; 2-time African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Grant project supervisor; Research Fellowship at the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Aleppo, Syria; Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Fellowship at the AFRC Institute of Food Research (IFR), Norwich, UK; and, a 3-time Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellowship at the University of Bonn, Germany, and Technical University of Munich, Germany. In 2003, he led a team of researchers in FUTA to win the maiden National Universities Commission (NUC) Research Grant award in Agriculture while in 2005, he also led a multi-disciplinary team of researchers to develop three (3) highly rated, NAFDAC-registered brands of FUTA Fruit Juices Nos: 01-9063; 01-9064; 01-9065 yet to be commercialised. Also in 2010, he led a multidisciplinary team of researchers to win a US $ 7m World Bank grant to assist FUTA emerge as the National Centre of Excellence in Food Security. In 2011, he facilitated another $60,000 grant to train 13 FUTA M.Tech/Ph.D students under the WORLD Bank Innovators of Tomorrow (IOT) scheme. In 2014, secured grants of N250, 000; N3m; US $ 8,300 and US $ 25,950 from NUC, TETFund, Thompson Reuters and FORD Foundation respectively, to host 8th WARIMA.
He belongs to several national and international professional Organisations including the New York Academy of Sciences, USA; Norwich Legume Group, UK, Nig Inst of Animal Science (NIAS); Inst Public Analysts of Nig (IPAN) & Fellow, Postgrad College of Animal Scientists of Nigeria (FCASN). Since 2009, he has received more than ten (10) professional service awards/award nominations from organisations/publishers including ‘The Guardian’. He has been cited in: Who's Who in Science & Technology in Nigeria; Who's Who in Science & Engineering in America; Achievers Who’s Who in Nigeria, 2010 and, a recipient of FUTA Excellence & Productivity Award in 2011 and 2014.
He was the University Orator, former Head, Department of Animal Production & Health and a 2-term Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies. He was a Member of the Governing Council, FUTA and doubled as the Director, Centre for Research & Development (CERAD) and the Lead Researcher, Centre of Excellence in Food Security in FUTA. He has served, either as Chairman or member, in more than 30 Committees/Boards in the University. As a recipient of more than 30 national/international research grants, he has mentored 16 Ph.Ds (with 6 of them now full Professors). He has to his credit, eight (8) monographs, contributed to three (3) books and published more than 150 scholarly papers in high impact(HI), reputable national and international journals.
Prof Aletor was the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State (2012-2015). On April 10, 2013, he was appointed Member, Specialized Committee for Science by the Governing Board, Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA), and again, on Oct 05, 2015 he was appointed Member, TETFund Standing Committee on R&D. In 2017, he was appointed member, Advisory Board of African Biosciences Ltd and Chairman, Committee on Science NNMA, respectively. He is currently Chairman, Planning & Implementation Committee of the proposed Loyola Jesuits University (LJU), Ewatto, Edo State, Nigeria. He is happily married and blessed with children.
